![]() In my opinion, that's probably the biggest weakness of Epic. Most organizations end up implementing Epic and a back-office ERP system to tie together. This is actually one of the few handfuls of ERP vendors in the marketplace that can do that. There are some exceptions or systems like Infor Cloud Suite that have specific capabilities built on top of their ERP system to address the needs of the healthcare market. Now, to be fair, most ERP systems, on the other hand, don't do EHR or don't do health care needs, as well as Epic, can. Most organizations end up needing another system oftentimes to address some of those needs. Some of those things are outside the direct realm of health records and direct patient care. In other words, it doesn't necessarily address certain capabilities and needs that hospitals/healthcare providers have outside the realm of patient or customer experience.įor example, a lot of times hospitals will require an ERP system on top of that back to address things like your financials, accounting, inventory management, fleet management, and asset management. Probably the biggest weakness of Epic and the biggest trade-off that organizations need to make when implementing Epic, is it is not a true enterprise resource planning or ERP system. Just like any solution out there that you might be considering, Epic also has its weaknesses in addition to the strengths that I have spoken about so far. ![]() Some of the biggest healthcare organizations in the world are using Epic, they've really invested heavily in the R&D to provide the functionality to address some very broad capabilities and needs that these organizations tend to have. There's a lot of very small micro-niches within the overall health care industry, and Epic has the breath to be able to address some of those very needs. For example, Epic provides specific modules for dental providers. ![]() The regulatory requirements of the healthcare industry can be met by Epic, as well as some of the individual niches and bolt-on or modules that fit within Epic. It is important to look for trends and understand what their own patients might be experiencing and what the proper solutions for those patients might be.Īnother consideration is because Epic is focused on healthcare and EHR is that it allows for regulatory compliance. There are so many organizations using this software that it provides customers with a very broad and robust set of benchmarks that healthcare providers can use to ascertain problems. This is actually a unique factor of Epic. This not only goes for their own patient population but also benchmarking to other patient populations outside of their organization or outside their customer base. Having the right technology that can help hospitals and healthcare providers provide better service and better outcomes for their patients can be very critical.Īnother strength and unique consideration with Epic software is that it has artificial intelligence and business intelligence analytics that allow healthcare providers better predict and understand patient needs based on patient records. That's particularly important in situations where it's literally a matter of life or death. One of the other advantages that customers of Epic realize is more efficient and cost-effective workflows, and better patient healthcare. ![]() It's been built over 40 years to focus on this very specific need and important niche. This is honestly probably the biggest strength of Epic. It is one of the few systems in the marketplace that is built for EHR and for hospital operations. First and foremost, it can handle most (if not all) of the needs of most hospitals and healthcare organizations.Īll the different components of a hospital and some of those healthcare-related processes can be addressed by Epic. Now, if you're comparing Epic software to other EHR systems in the marketplace, like Cerner, or McKesson, you may be wondering what are some strengths that make Epic different. ![]() ![]() We are all for good, clean fun with a double dose of laughter. 10 FUNNY PRANKS TO DO AT HOME TO YOUR PARENTS Then the joke will be on you, and we doubt that anyone will be laughing. You’re bound to get an earful (or worse) if you do. When it comes to pranks to do at home to your parents, you would NEVER want to go too far. ![]() These are the types of pranks that go above and beyond what’s acceptable to many people. There are also pranks that cause public alarm and may involve the intervention of a higher authority, such as cops or paramedics. Worse, those who have been pranked badly can also become distrustful and paranoid. When pranks go too far, often the humor gets dissipated and people stop laughing. A prank becomes harmful, especially in situations where someone is bullied, harassed or even physically injured. The answer is YES, and bad pranks are usually the culprits. Wake Forest University Acting and Directing Professor Cynthia Gendrich even surmised that while concocting a prank builds tension, the payoff (which is laughter) releases the tension with social laughter “expelling extra energy.” Even just the thought of a prank and how people would react upon its execution can already be a good source of laughter. This type of thinking actually makes people contemplate their shortcomings and act upon them by exhibiting new behaviors or self-improvement. People rewind the prank in their minds: a process that’s called counterfactual thinking. As long as it’s a mild form of teasing, pranking serves as a “social glue” to hold a group together.Īdditionally, a study made by three psychologists proposed that pranks force people to look at themselves and whether they’re too trusting, vigilant, or even paranoid. In this context, being pranked and picked on can actually raise one’s status and sense of belongingness. Smith College Cultural Sociologist Jonathan Wynn views pranks as a means to “maintain social boundaries,” and they are quite common in fraternities and sororities. Recent studies suggest that the experience of being deceived or duped compels a person to do a self-check on his state of egotism or perhaps, his disregard for what’s happening around him. In an academic sense, anthropologists discovered that pranks have become a cultural means to dilute one’s success with humility. Bad pranks are often vengeful and degrading, neutral ones are more inclined to provide harmless punch lines, while good pranks are humorous satires of human fears and failures. WHAT ARE PRANKS?Ī prank is defined as “a practical joke or mischievous act” that’s pulled on someone, causing the victim to be confused, dumbfounded, or even embarrassed.Īctivist and prankster Abbie Hoffman has classified pranks into three categories: bad, neutral, and good. ![]() But have you ever pulled a prank on your parents? Plex also notes how they had a hard time finding a configuration that worked with all their clients (which remember include Smart TVs, brrr.).Įven if I can totally feel their pain, this part is not really new, but well done for getting a A+ score nonetheless. See for example this post by Michele Spagnuolo. P.S.: I finally figured out why they advise you might need to turn off DNS rebinding protections: a domain like 192-168-1-7.#.plex.direct which resolves to a local IP (that they use when you want to connect to a server on your LAN while still using the HTTPS web app) is exactly what a rebinding attack needs to access vulnerable services behind your firewall. They actually built this UI quite well IMHO: you will be automatically redirected to HTTPS only if all your servers are updated but can still force the HTTPS web app by loading it directly (a message will explain you can't connect to the old servers, and offer you to load the HTTP app instead). It's important to note that for the user to be able to load ALL their servers must support HTTPS, otherwise the HTTP ones will be unreachable because of the mixed-content block discussed above. since the root domain is plex.direct they won't have any trouble doing the required Domain Validation.the user/server/whatever hash makes it so a certificate can only be used to authenticate a specific server (even if it can have any IP) which makes it safe to hand the private key to the user. ![]() the wildcard certificate is valid whatever the IP used.the "jolly" DNS setup allows the client to connect to the server with any IP it wants - for example 192.168.1.7 when at home, 1.2.3.4 when not - which can change without waiting for any DNS propagation time. This way when a server first starts it asks for its wildcard certificate to be issued (which happened almost instantly for me) and then the client, instead of connecting to, connects to which resolves to the same IP, but with a domain name that matches the certificate that the server (and only that server, because of the hash) holds. Also note that they claim the number of servers is in the millions. It's interesting to see how Digicert minted a new Intermediate certificate for this deployment. Then they partnered with Digicert to issue a wildcard certificate for *. to each user, where HASH is - I guess - a hash of the user or server name/id.įor example see how my server presents a *. certificate now. $ dig +shortīasically any IP.*.plex.direct domain resolves to IP. First they solved the problem of servers not having a domain name or a stable IP (they are mostly reached via bare dynamic IPs or even local IPs) by setting up a dynamic DNS space under plex.direct: $ dig +short We can't ask them to get a domain name and a certificate just to watch their movies over TLS. And they need a valid public certificate: there is no UI to skip warnings generated by XHR and a self-signed certificate would be a quite poor security guarantee anyway.īut as we said above, the servers are run by the users on their own machines and IPs. ![]() active mixed content.Īlso the server connections need to be over HTTPS. The problem is that now the browser will block our XHR connections to the servers because they are HTTP connections initiated from a HTTPS page a.k.a. Let's say Plex sets up HTTPS for and we load instead. The clients connect to to discover the servers linked to your account, and then connect directly to the server.įor example, if you use the web app, you load, the app asks the list of your servers and then connect to each of them with a XHR like. The server is a piece of software that runs on your own machine, where you have all your movies and TV series.
